The Centre for Asia Minor Studies’ Musical Folklore Archives (MFA) were founded in 1930 by musicologist and ethnographer Melpo Logotheti Merlier (1890-1979). The Archives is the oldest centre for the study of traditional, Byzantine and urban folkmusic, and incorporates extremely valuable primary musicological material.
Sound Library
The MFA’s sound library contains rare, non-commercially available recordings from 1930 onwards, as well as field recordings, that document the entire range of Hellenic musical tradition.
Record Library
The MFA’s record library includes a large collection of traditional, Byzantine and folk music, comprising commercial vinyl records (78, 45 and 33 rpm) and CDs. A significant portion of the record library has been digitized.
Manuscripts and Sheet Music
The MFA’s collection of manuscripts includes important documents, such as studies, transcripts of recordings in Western music notation, and Byzantine sheet music.
Instrument Collection
The MFA’s instrument collection contains a few but very precious musical instruments that are significant for Greek organology.
